Four billion IP addresses seemed like more than enough back in the early 1980's when IPv4 was created, but with so many people on the Internet using multiple devices today, they have run out. In the late 1990's the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) came up with an addressing system that used 128-bits called IPv6. This gives 3.4e38 possibilities.
