Ihmisen historiassa metsästyksellä on ollut suuri merkitys. Fennoskandinaviassa se on kalastuksen ohella vanhin elinkeinomme. Ne olivat pitkään lähes ainoita erämaiden hyödyntämiskeinoja. Uusien riista- ja kalarikkaiden alueiden vetovoima sai ihmiset hakeutumaan ja asuttamaan yhä pohjoisempia seutuja.
