The two bioactive GC receptors (NPR-A and NPR-B) contain three domains: (1) an extracellular domain that recognizes the ring structure of the mature natriuretic peptide; (2) a transmembrane region that undergoes conformational change during natriuretic peptide binding; and (3) the intracellular region that contains the GC-element responsible for the generation of 3',5'-guanosine cyclic monophosphate, otherwise known as cGMP, the second messenger transducing agent of the natriuretic peptide.
