An interval is the distance between two pitches. When these two pitches occur at the same time, we call the distance a harmonic interval. When they occur one after the other, we call the distance a melodic interval. Consider the following musical example: the Soprano (S.) and Alto (A.) voices of Josquin's Missa Pange Lingua (from the middle of the Gloria section).
