Text Details
The original title of Julien Gracq's novel The Opposing Shore is Le rivage des Syrtes, which refers to the southernmost region of Orsenna, a fictional stand-in for Italy, where there are cars but no electricity, a country ruled by the ancient and decadent city of the same name which seems to be-but isn't quite-Venice.
